Hello everyone, I wanted to ask if your customized aftermarket wheels are all DOT-T certified? The set of wheels I installed doesn’t seem to have DOT-T certification, and now when driving on the highway (at around 75 mph), I experience intermittent shaking. Could it be an issue with the wheels (the ET changed from -2.5 to -5)? Or the tires (305 changed to 315)? Or maybe because of a previous impact that caused deformation in my right front wheel knuckle?:giggle:
I have 2 pairs of 10.5" Factory Reproductions, I have had both over 185. Smooth as silk. But like Jimmy said, you need RFV balancing by someone who actually knows how to use the machine. Not as easy as it sounds. And quality
tires!

Were they correctly balanced on a machine with road force capabilities, and that was recently calibrated, plus operated by a competent person? If "yes" to those question, was the Smart Weight function turned off?

If even a single one was a "no", all bets are off and I would expect vibrations.
Yes, all four wheels underwent Hunter Road Force tests and the data was perfect. However, after the installation was completed, the technician noticed excessive vibration in the hub when he struck the wheel spokes with his fist.:giggle:

I never go on the cheap when it comes to wheels..or tires..(on any of my vehicles..ever)
Yes, I think so too. I originally wanted the wheel style from Jimmy's profile picture on the forum, but the repair shop told me that model has been discontinued and is unavailable, so I opted for a custom one instead.:giggle:

Okay, so incorrect mounting will make a perfectly balanced wheel and tire not run true. There's a number of reasons why that may be the reason for vibrations.

And while the wheel style in my profile picture was still alive and well (up to '23 as far as I know), when I got my '18 they weren't offered in Hyper Black. Found a set of NOS ones on eBay, problem solved.

Should something happen to those wheels I have one nice spare bought used. Or, I can have a pristine set of black ones (courtesy of DGatzby) powder coated to match.

Thank you. I'll go get the wheel balancing and Road Force tests done again to try to pinpoint the source of the problem.:giggle:

Very true, but...

If the rim isn't perfect, which is rarely the case with late model OE wheels, the Hunter balancer usually allows counteracting the respective wheel and tire and discrepancies and produce a setup that runs great.

It's when the wheel is perfect and the tire isn't that I run into trouble...there's no easy way to fix that.

Slip the guy a 20, or whatever it takes, to turn the Smart Weight off.

Spare parts are indeed very important. Maybe I should go and purchase a set of original factory wheels and try installing them.:giggle:

To me, having spare wheels is like having insurance. By having them I probably won't need them. It would suck to try finding one in a hurry if one got damaged.

Then again, in my case I'd be more likely to need a spare car, maybe a spare me.

Thank you, Jimmy. The technician did activate a feature during the road force measurement. I'll go take a look and snap some photos, and let him know to keep the Smart Weight function turned off.[biggrin]

I realize it isn't relative to this particular thread, but Goodyear truck tires are freaking horrible for concentricity.

Oh, there are certainly name brand tires that are anything but round or consistent. Especially so in OE applications.

On the other hand, needing trailer tires a while back I swallowed hard and bought eight Venom tires, two different sizes. Cheap imports, how good could they possibly be? Well, I have since bought eight more and they are round and have all balanced with ease. Plus, I like their all steel construction (basically a mini commercial tire) and their higher speed ratings.

Are we far enough from car tires yet?

Installed new tie rod ends, this weekend. Car is at the shop getting aligned. After 110k, it's time for some new parts.

Here is what I have on both cars with 305's, except this paint config is apparently no longer available in 10.5. The pockets were black and I repainted them to gray.

Some of the other "slingshot" wheels are available in 10.5. I am very happy with them. You can always have a wheel repair shop refinish the wheels to match your wheels. Here is the 10.5" FR next to the OEM.

That looks really nice, 2nd.

I should probably paint my black ones gray, then sand off the paint from the spokes.

Just jack up the car and run it at about 30mph and polish off the spokes! :)

If I could fit a wheel that large on the lathe it would be easy to accomplish.
