Changes to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum

I have a hard time listening to this guy, but he’s a tribologist and pretty smart. Sounds like the war has caused some degradation of PUP.

Hey Tony, I use Amsoil or Mobil 1 (I use to work for Exxon/Mobil).
I recently witnessed a tear down of a Ford Ecoboost that needed timing stuff that had over a 100k on the engine whos whole life was on Amsoil and the inside of the engine looked brand new.

I’ve been using PUP. I may switch to M1 ESP or Amsoil. ESP meets Porsche A40, which is about as tough a certification there is. I’d run HPL Supercar if it was a little easier to buy.

I had run amsoil until this year. I put a built shortblock in my car last year and noticed some build up in the oil pan. My friend Tim that runs an 8 second mustang on e85 noticed the build up also using Driven full synthetic oil. Talking with other racers he switched to driven GP-1 last year and when he took the pan off at the end of the season he didn't have the build up, looked new. So this year I'm running the GP-1.

Now if I was not running e85 I would still be using Amsoil 0-40

I started using Amsoil on my 2013 Mustang once it hit 1000 miles. At 5k I put a blower on it. I pulled the engine around 40k miles to put better rods and pistons in it. The shop that did it said the engine looked brand new. So that really sold me on the oil but now running e85 it may not be the best choice for me

What this guy didn't mention though was the SRT branded oil. There are still manufacturers of the base oil in the US. Maybe the SRT oil still uses the old base oil?

Does GP-1 have 0w40?

nope. I use their 10-40. Not much of a difference. I think we can get hung up on oil and think the wrong weight will ruin the engine. My 13 Mustang took 5-20 but when I put the blower on it I went to 10-30. So for 35k miles I had the wrong oil in it and it looked fine inside
