Our 2006 Durango 5.7L occasionally burps up a large amount of coolant (maybe a quart?).

This same motor also has a history of eating water pumps and/or thermostats.

Anyone have this experience with this motor?

Any idea what, or how to prevent it?

Every time its done it in the past (once every couple of years) I've checked fir problems, found nothing, and then been fine.

It's annoying and the wife is a bit unnerved by it (it's her crappy weather driver).

Usually when this happens and there's no issues with the water pump or cap, it means something is pressuring the cooling circuit. Unfortunately, this could be a lot of not so good things. Head gasket going, pin hole in cylinder. Does it happen at a specific temp or driving conditions?

You could also have a blockage if it's high mile. You could try flushing the system, seeing if you have a lot of scale buildup in the radiator

Have you tried to open the bleed port on top of the water pump housing next to to the thermostat? Maybe you have a bit of air trapped in the system. You can bleed it cold.

A qt of fluid is a lot...he said it happens intermittinly...but not that often...why it happens repeatedly..and so infrequently is perplexing

You checked the lower radiator hoses for collapsing? I had a similar issue on my old RT Challenger and had to put a spring in the lower hose.

2nd this, had it happen to me as well on the 5.7. (no symptoms however, noticed one and just had both of them changed.)
