2021 Ram TRX
#1
So I had the chance today to spend some time with the new 2021 Ram TRX. I walked away with some good thoughts on the TRX as well as my 2020 Raptor.

Let’s start by addressing the elephant (Hellcat) in the room. The Super Charger and the exhaust simply sound better than what Ford is doing with the current Raptor (I’ll leave the 3rd Gen Raptor out of it for now). The 3.5L EcoPoop just can’t replicate the soundtrack of the TRX.

From there let’s talk about the AWD setup in the TRX. The launch of the line is violent! It’s also impressive for a big truck from 60mph to north of legal speed limits.

The interior compared to my 2020 looks better, and has more soft touch surfaces. The 12” screen is cool, and the 360 camera is super clear. The steering wheel has a nice feeling, but I wonder about the life span of the alcantara leather. The driver seat felt good to the hand, but it was narrower and firmer than the driver seat in the Raptor. I was surprised that the seat in the TRX was not at least as comfortable as the seat in my Raptor.

On the road you notice the extra weight. The Hellcat does a good job pushing the truck, but you can’t hide the body roll. It feels planted, but the Raptor is more nimble/light feeling in the corners.

Overall, the TRX is one hell of a truck. Where I struggle is the price. My Raptor‘s sticker price was $74,000 (I paid $68,000), and a TRX with the same options is just shy of $90,000. My brain has a hard time processing that kind of money for a truck. My hope is that if I do decide to move onto a TRX, that we will see some discounted pricing in 2022. I guess only time will tell.

So in conclusion if the TRX was slightly less expensive to purchase you would take that over the Raptor?

Great feedback...visually the Ram has the edge(my.02)..interior wise..nice job..performance speaks for itself..agreed the price is lofty..It just doesn't fit any niche for me...but I do like the fact they built it...

I do struggle with spending that kind of money, but prices seem to be more about relativity these days. Buying my wife's truck did that to me, I think... $55k for a 2018 was a lot to spend for a truck, but I am comparing that to my '98 1 ton diesel dually which I paid new for $30k. Nowadays spending numbers like $90k for a truck is a totally different picture than it used to be - is that the inflation speaking? I spent $48k For the Hellcat (used) - damn! A lot of money for a used car at the time!
So I guess I just struggle putting the $90k in perspective... A new Redeye is what $75-80k ?

All these things are too much money at MSRP imo.

Good write up and yeh yikes which in all fairness not like I haven’t spent too much money for vehicles. But my used Raptor I picked up for 58k and had 10k miles in her it’s hard to part with her at this time. And spend another 40k plus to replace what IMO is just a really fun truck and damn fast for what she is.
and yes the dealers are calling me to buy one but I’m sitting it out for now.

It seems costs of new vehicles has jumped just since 2015...15 seems like just yesterday...but it was 7 years ago...I just paid 70 grand for a new Ram 1500...prices sure have gone up while we were sleeping I guess:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Interesting, thanks for posting you thoughts.

I really like the idea of replacing my 19 Rebel with one but I don't think I can justify the extra cost. I paid around £58K with import duties for my Rebel and I imagine the TRX would come in at £90 to 100K so its a substantial difference.

I'm always surprised at the high prices of mundane cars, especially top spec models with optional extras. People pay £50K for a mid sized VW Anorak pickup.

I want the engine but theres a few things like Ram boxes (could get some swing boxes) and air suspension that I'd miss (great for loading heavy things on entry mode). I don't use it off road so no advantage in all that fancy stuff and the interior wouldn't be significantly different.

Shame really, I haven't done the usual mileage this year so will probably reconsider if I decide to change next year.

I think the TRX will have to under $80,000 (God that’s an awful number) for me to consider it. Ram has a history of severely discounting trucks, and my hope is we’ll see some of that in 2022.

Nice thread. When Raptor came out, they were considered pricey?..So slap cost of supercharged motor..stepped up interior/w better tech.. kinda think the price point is to be expected..
***Disclaimer***Cant wait to get mine! 👀😉

I’m in a raffle on street speeds channel to win one of these bad boys. Wish me luck guys. No offense though but if I got the TRX. I’d flip that immediately and pocket the 90k.. then probably buy a Trackpack GT500 and do full PPF only light drive it for like 8000 miles and resale that for probably not much loss

Yes, it should come to just under $70K, plus tax and license. Got almost 9K off of sticker.
Compared to 1971demon's "regular" 1500 for the same money, I think we'll like having the extra horsepower.

How the FLOCK are you getting $9,000 off sticker? Best I’ve seen is MSRP.

Crazy! Right...Its a biz. Most dealers are stead fast@ msrp or over, on the TRX. The dealership I ordered my TRX was delivering a Limited Edition “Launch” TRX for 20k over msrp, day I ordered mine.
I paid msrp for my factory order

Good relationship with the dealer. And we have bought a few vehicles from there in the past seven years.
Maybe eight or nine, not counting this 1500.

It's an odd situation, but being a very small dealership, a sale can mean more to them than the profit.

If the alcantera is like the challenger seats I wouldnt worry. I put 52k on my challenger DD in a 1.5 years and seats were like new when I got rid of it.

I think @Jimmy N. gets a kick back on the number of doors sold. Notice how he keeps getting people really good deals on Chargers there???

:p
