Back in the 80's, Mi had emissions checks. It was more of a money-grab, than anything else. If you didn't pass, you could spend enough money to get a waive, but it wasn't cheap. We were a Mi. testing station at the towing company I worked at. What a farce. We used to pass all us guy's muclecars, by punching in the vin info...then shoving the sniffer up the tailpipe of our new Ford Ranger parts-chaser.
Viola!! Passed.

These days the leftist wackos would seize your vehicles, fine you and throw you in prison for that!!!! Unless you had the correct political affiliation of course.

Quick check without a reader to see if it's in ready state or not, turn the car on without starting it. If the check engine light starts flashing after 10-15 seconds, it's not ready. If it stays solid, it's ready.

Someone somewhere said that after loss of power it takes 22 drive cycles to be ready to test.

We have the annual safeties required here in Virginia, and I sure hate em too OP.

Funny to me is that in all the years I've live in VA, I've never before seen so many autos that violate the spirit of the inspection scheme. It seems like it's the norm now rather than the exception for folks to have super dark limo type tint on their front windows, and no front license plate displayed etc. I'm guessing all these folks just alter em each each year to meet the inspection requirements and then go back to their customizations after they pass. Also - and I have not been following this too closely cause I simply never do anything to voluntarily invite the man into my life - I think they may have changed some laws here where stuff like that can no longer serve as the primary reason for being pulled over. Again, I'd never try to walk the line like that, but seemingly there sure are lots of folks that do.

WOW! You must be really rally old! I got my license in Ohio in 1985 and never remember any emissions testing in Ohio. Plus my dad had a shop at our house from the time I could walk, and I do not remember anyone coming in talking about it either.
We don't currently have emissions or safety inspections here (NW Ohio)
The most we have to do is dealer inspection if you buy an out of state vehicle to get plates, and that just basically verifies VIN and everything is attached to the vehicle. Plus, tags are set prices and not based on vehicle value like some states.
I thought you guys had something in place for safety inspections. Most cars I see over there have doors, fenders, lights, and most of the glass. Not like 50 years ago! :ROFLMAO:

Our registrations are based on value for newer cars, and that sucks. However, we don't have vehicle inspections for anything, other than hand-builds or rebuilt totals.
Also, no front vehicle tags...

It's pretty casual for old cars. I've never been pulled-over in the rare times I street-drive this car...
