When is the killer gonna be at the track? I know the million dollar question right?
I know it seems like the never ending story. To be honest, while there have been some delays that have been frustrating, once it went past March, the get-it-done-by date moved to next October. It’s too hot at the tracks out here (Vegas, Bakersfield, Phoenix) to run until fall. So.. the answer is October. The amount of work necessary to get it finished has been unbelievable. There are a lot of things that could have been short cut to get it running but at this point we’re not going to do anything half ass. It’s going to be full ass 🙃

I fully understand this grind, currently there myself albeit at a slower pace.

Hot side…. ✅. Plumbed the wastegates into the exhaust pipe. That keeps the exhaust exit to one pipe out the fender and it gives the wastegate a really solid support on both ends instead of just hanging it on the down pipe. There’s a tremendous amount of stress on the wastegate attachment point with all the banging going on and they are subject to cracking the pipe if not supported. This will work 👊 IMG_8592.jpeg IMG_7807.jpeg

Done ☑️. Be home on Sunday. At the highest level of cool is the laser etched Carlin logo on the wing side plate. Sweet! 7317028694439105603.jpeg 1886078332675940048.jpeg 3971811726440829973.jpeg

Is the vent for dry ice or to vent puke tank? Cooling fluid, fuel?

Puke tank. Vented to the outside rear in case the motor blows and pumps oil in excess of what the tank can hold.

Some more detail shots. Lotsa little things. Changed the window net to a hinged attachment. The way it was before wasn’t actually legal. Icebox now rides shotgun to make room for that puke tank in the trunk. The wing struts are anchored to the tail lights instead of the bumper. Having to deal with those every time to open the trunk was a pain. Those little push button locks for the deck lid and hood are very trick. 😎 IMG_7857.jpeg 6631853650981760185.jpeg IMG_7855.jpeg IMG_7893.jpeg IMG_7894.jpeg IMG_7909.jpeg IMG_7907.jpeg

I had a pm asking about mounting turbos like this and my thoughts on the Hellion type setups vs mine. So I thought I would respond with a post. I got the turbos from James Golden out of his old Redeye. They included a real nice set of 4 into one headers and waste gates. To take advantage of those pretty much dictated where the turbos were going to go. One of the most important parts of a turbo system for performance is keeping the hot side short. Using a log manifold with a long down tube to the turbo (Hellion) is a compromise at least. The distance from the forward cylinder head exhaust port to the turbo on mine is less than 30 inches. That insures high velocity (hot) exhaust to spin those 76mm’s quickly. The first thing for me was to determine how I was going to support the turbos. These turbos weigh about 35 lbs ea. If you just hang that weight on the header, you’ll be cracking the down pipe at some point. Back when I first got the turbos, I mentioned something called a Maven Mount. They allow for a tube to be welded to support the turbo from the center. We pulled the lower radiator support and replaced it with a removable bar that runs under the turbos to attach those tubes. I have some pictures that if you look, you can see those tubes. Another consideration for me was running a radiator. The Challenger doesn’t have a lot of room for all this stuff up front. The turbos were being placed where other stuff used to be. That was made more difficult because the turbos weren’t mirror image (damn you James 😂). One had to be placed at a different angle than the other to work with the cold piping. I needed to have that coming off the throttle body at 90 degree directions to fit under the hood. Starting to get the picture? It was a exercise in puzzle pieces. Anyway…. This is the reason that the plug-n-play Hellion setup exists in spite of its compromises. Paying a capable shop (like Redeye Racecars or Carlin Fabrication) to start this from scratch would end up costing around $10k for parts and labor (not counting the turbos/waste gates and BOV’s). Fortunately for me I get to do this stuff with my friends at these places and apparently they like me 😂 Here’s some pics….. I’m thinking about taking an idea on one of those Hellion setups back to the shop and see about making a project out of it. The one thing that remote mounted turbo deal has going for it is the package has virtually no fabrication necessary. That keeps the cost way down. The downside for me is the necessity of running those small (restrictive) air filters. With the experience we’ve had with running a filter on the Whipples, I know there has to be a need for ram air with those things. What I’m thinking is…. a car that is setup for just racing has shed all the stuff attached to the firewall. That opens up the space to run 4” air intake tubes from the turbos to NACA ducts on the hood. I saw that Tim Barth just ran 7.7’s with one of the small turbo Hellion setups with a 8 speed car. May have been Sipples. Not sure. Spankintime just acquired the Dragnum from Max Nichols and is having Carlin back half it to run a big tire. That car ran 8.3’s with the 3.0 Whipple. I’m thinking a real serious Hellion turbo project might get some attention.

That’s a good idea for the air ducts, that’s my issue - if this is a street car, down here you have to deal with sand and potential flash storms. Filters would get clogged quickly, and you’d have to risk possible water ingestion
